2026: June

A new era has begun.

This will not be a mom blog by any means, but motherhood has definitely changed my life, for the better!

Of course, it’s more challenging, if not nearly impossible, to stand in the kitchen cooking up the amazing dishes I normally love to make when you have a tiny baby glued to you.

At the same time, rich, nourishing food is so important postpartum. I’ll be honest and admit that we ordered a lot this month. We’ve always ordered food from time to time, but never this regularly. At least we know all the good spots in town now.

I’m tired, my days are slow, and right now, my focus is on my little one and on recovering. I try to sleep whenever I can and go for walks early in the morning, before it gets too hot.

And on these walks, I treat myself to decaf coffee and pastries. By now, I’ve tried every nearby coffee shop.

Another destination on my outings is the nearby grocery store, where I stock up on snacks and make sure I have everything I need for my breakfast bowls.

I think breakfast (and brunch, its big brother) might just be my favourite meal of the day. I love a good bowl of oatmeal with ever-changing toppings. There are usually berries, conveniently kept in the freezer, along with nut butter, yoghurt, banana, and a mix of seeds: chia, sunflower, pumpkin… whatever I happen to have on hand. Sometimes I’ll add a drizzle of honey, some dark chocolate, or date caramel (see the recipe on the blog from January 2026).

I’ve also experimented with more elaborate versions: soaking the oats in tea, mixing espresso into the yoghurt before adding it to the bowl for an almost tiramisu-like flavour, or caramelizing the fruit topping before spooning it over the oats.

The moodboard brings together my coffee trips, delicious pastries, and plenty of berries. Especially the blueberries I’ve been craving lately. Since I didn’t do much cooking this month, I’ll share my grandma’s pancake recipe instead. You’ll find the handwritten note on Fairmont paper in the picture below.

Life at the Coffee Shop:

My Grandmas Canadian Pancake Recipe

Recipe: Grandmas Canadian Pancakes

Ingredients

1 cup flour
1 tbsp sugar
1 tbsp backing powder
½ tsp salt
2 eggs
1 cup milk
2 tbl oil

Instructions

Step 1: Mix flour, sugar, backing powder and salt.

Step 2: Beat eggs, milk and oil and stir into flour mix.

Step 3: Heat pan, add oil or butter, pour in ¼ cup dollops, cook till bubbly, turn, brown.

Tipp: Separate eggs, beat egg whites, then add gently to final mixture. This makes them even more fluffy.

Serving suggestion

Simmer 150 g blueberries with 1–2 tbsp sugar and a squeeze of lemon for about 5 minutes until jammy. You can also just scatter fresh berries on top. Or the Canadian classic, maple syrup and butter.

All happiness depends on a leisurely breakfast.
